Spiegel must look the nuts in training to have earned himself a new deal, been abysmal every time I've seen the bloke.

What Carroll likes or not is neither here nor there as he won't play much

Some commentator or pundit last season made an interesting point that actually Carroll doesn't like whipped-in crosses because he's not that mobile - he wants deep hanging crosses that he can attack.

Feghouli looks a certain starter already to me from what I've seen just in the highlights. Fantastic crosser of the ball as we saw for the AC goal whipped in low with pace, looks strong as an Ox, then he put a couple of excellent paced whipped in crosses to head in, the first was met by Samuelson who made a fudge of it and I forgive as still learning, the second put on a plate for Valencia who misses by miles and ended up in a heep like a sack of shit on his arse as per normal.

I hope so too. To be fair to Bilic and all coaches, I can see why they are reluctant to risk what might be their careers on under-21 players. A young player might make a mistake that loses a game that turns into a losing run, and six games later the manager might be out of a job with their reputation in tatters. That's why I think the lead has to come from above - the owners need to give the manager the encouragement.

Some good performances from the youngsters, but we will need to field a stronger team in the EL to progress this year. Let's hope we don't fall for the play acting that got our players sent off last year!

Cullen > Noble is a fact I presented, yes. You're going to have to adjust to this new reality.

Re: FC Slovacko v West Ham United
A good run in the Europa League could be the making of a few of our youngsters. It does make me a tad apprehensive the way way people are automatically saying 'we have more games next season'. If we go out straight away and don't have such a good FA cup run we could actually end up with less...but looking at the positives I hope we get to see a bit more of the likes of Cullen, Burke, and Samuelson in a decent run. Completely agree that opportunity is often one of the most important factors. I remember going drinking in Whitechapel with a friend after the Everton game two seasons ago and bumping into a group or scousers who had been really impressed by the Cullen goal we showed on the big screen before the game. I pointed out that it's all well and good making a PR move out of the kids but if they never get a chance and end up moving to Colchester or wherever then what's the point. Of course I was in a bad mood about BFS at the time, let's hope things are going to improve and the days of people like Jordan Spence rotting in the reserves and out on loan until they're about 23 are long gone and Slav and his team will take a real interest in those with talent and move on those who aren't likely to make it in time to allow the generation below to see some opportunities for progression.

Have I honestly seen on this thread that Cullen is better than Noble?

Alex V 12:25 Wed Jul 20
Re: FC Slovacko v West Ham United
Cullen's another example. Obviously I don't know the player that well but at face value on what I've seen over two seasons I wouldn't say he has less ability than Noble had at the same age. But without the breaks he is very likely to end up at a lower league club somewhere demotivated and picking up the pieces. What he needs is a chance, like Noble got under Curbishley because Quashie got injured and we were just desperate.

Re: FC Slovacko v West Ham United
It was Samuelson, tnb, another I was impressed by. Good comments - agreed Kilgallon had a lot of potential, but it depends on development and motivation and luck how far that potential is fulfilled.

'That role' being centre half, obviously.

Re: FC Slovacko v West Ham United
Yep Burke went to right back against Lusitans but acquitted himself well at centre half at the end of the previous season. Had his dodgy moments, but people seem to forget that all young centre halves do - Tomkins (Yakubu, was it?) comes to mind and even Rio had more than one. I do think full back can be a good grounding (with comparitively less risk) for a young centre half, but to be fair to Burke he more than proved himself in that role at Bradford last season. It's difficult to see what more the lad can do without taking a chance on him. I'm fully prepared to admit I could be wrong - I rated Elliott Ward once upon a time, and I still think Matty Kilgallon could have gone on to be a better player than he did - but I have a good feeling about Burke, myself.

Just saw our goals on a rather rubbish video - was that Samuelson with the cross/pass for Noble's? Good vision whoever it was. I actually thought Samuelson looked a bit too big for his boots when I saw him for the u21s against Newcastle, but there is no doubting he has the talent (even if that pass wasn't him). I actually came across a Man City youth player who would have been more or less a contemporary of Samuelson at work a while back and his attitude was awful. Now, he may not be representative but if not and Samuelson has decided he needed to get out of such an environment then good for him.

Agreed. I think the owners could give their managers a remit to develop young players, as was traditionally the case during the golden era of the club. As a fan it's what I love to see. As with most pre-season campaigns, I see a bunch of young players there I'd be happy to see developed in the first-team squad.

Randolph, Burke, Noble, Obiang, Samuelsen and Feghouli made us look solid first half.
Fletcher looks like a real striker in the making. Can't wait for the big games to come

Re: FC Slovacko v West Ham United
fair enough... I missed the 'yet'.

Would be great if a fair few of our youngsters are given a chance this season. Can't risk too many at once as we need to progress as far as possible in all competitions.

Hope we see at least one on the bench each game and given decent game time if circumstances allow.

No he played centre-back in that run. He did play right-back in one of the European games last pre-season, played very well as I remember.

Did I write him off? I thought I praised him specifically and called him a 'class talent'? He looks like a potential star!
